“Come on in, Leon.” I opened the camper door, allowing the contractor to step inside. “There’s not much room in here, but we can sit at the dinette.”

“This is a nice little setup, but I’m sure you’re anxious to get the house up and running,” Leon observed.

“Absolutely,” Lela chimed in as she emerged from the bedroom. We’d gotten back from her disastrous date just in time to talk to Leon after his extremely detailed inspection. “We hope you’ve brought us good news.”

Leon retrieved a sheet of paper from his bag and scooted it across the table to us. “Here’s the quote for the remodel. Now, keep in mind that supply costs have gone sky-high. Even though I’m cutting you all a really good deal on the labor side of things, the cost of wood is killer right now.”

I glanced at the total listed on the bottom of the sheet and almost passed out. Scooting the paper over to Lela, I turned to Leon. “We appreciate you taking the time to figure that out for us. Give us a day or two to talk it over, and we’ll be in touch.”

“Sure thing. As long as I hear back from you by the end of the week, I can get you squeezed into my schedule. Otherwise, we’re looking at a few months before I could start working on your house.” Leon stood and opened the camper door. “Either way, I’ll see you ladies at garden club.”

Once Leon was out of earshot, I allowed myself to freak out. “Lela, did you see the total? Even with the inheritance from Susan, we can’t afford that. We might as well just tear the whole house down and start from scratch at those prices.”

“Yeah. Too bad you can’t make the trees donate some lumber to us.” She laughed to herself.

What… Was that possible? For a normal person, of course not, but I wasn’t a normal person, was I? “You know what? That’s really not a bad idea.” I hurried out the door and ran to the closest tree I could find, an Oak tree at the edge of the tree line. “Good morning,” I said to the tall, majestic tree. Pressing my hands onto its rough bark, I closed my eyes and imagined my energy flowing into it.

I opened my eyes and instructed the tree to grow a limb that could be removed for our house. It seemed eager to oblige because a low-lying and rather large limb had formed within seconds.

“Whoa. That was amazing. Do you think you could do it again?” Lela asked. I’d been so focused I hadn’t even heard her come out behind me.

“Yeah, I get the sense that the tree is happy to help us,” I explained. “Call Leon and tell him to turn around and come straight back to the house. We have something to show him,” I instructed.

When Leon arrived minutes later, he looked perplexed. “Did you all have a question about the line items in the quote?” he asked as he made his way across the yard to where we stood.
